Session Logs

50: Infinite Improbablities

Introduction

This week, whilst I have a few things to write in the intro, at least at this point, my main concearn is not being able to remember exactly what happened in the session. Its one problem of adlibing the whole session, rembering who said what and exactly what occurred afterwards. I've had the same problem in the past writing session logs for Amber.

I had thought somebody might have got the "Leon" connection, but nobody said anything so I have to assume you didn't. I also can't remember exactly what was said about him either being difficult or sarcastic. Technically he was being evasive, providing either directly logical but limited statements, half truths, ambigeous answers, and in one case a complete lie. This should have sounded more alarm bells than it did, because I assume that you as players didn't remember everything you'd learnt about Androids,
1) They're completely logical entities as dictated by their programming although some can emulate human responses, but they're still programmed responses.
2) They also all technically have to have owners,
3) They also obey orders given by a human.
I should remind you that Lisa, even before gaining her emotion emulation upgrade displayed atypical Android behaviour in that she displayed emotional responses in circumstances where she shouldn't have. I've also mentioned on several occasions, primarily in respect of Lisa, that if anyone learnt that she displayed human like emotional responses, then she would be impounded and destroyed, doubly so since her highly illegal upgrade that allows her to completely pass as human.

The introduction of Leon, Nyx, and Milo isn't the only deviation from the storyline I have up my sleeve. There is at least one more to come, before we even get to episode 4 which I still haven't decided exactly how I'm going to run yet. It's possibly the most complex episode in the series, although from memory there is at least one more difficult episde to come in Series 3. There are also a few more 'infills' where the writers have played fast an loose with getting people from A to D without going through B and C on the way.

Possibly last on my list, at least for now, whilst mostly for Jon, has an inverse for everyone else. How does a GA cop, who's always tried to do the "right thing" and avoided all the potential pitfalls/complications associated with taking payoffs from either Corporate sources (or other GA officers in the pay of a Corporation) or local crime bosses, and as a result had been consistantly overlooked his whole career, then had all his illusions shattered when he finally thinks he's got his big break (getting selected by Kierken for the EOS-7 Corporate Conference Security detail completely out of the Blue) react when he finds himself rescued by the Crew of a Ship most of whose members are in the GA's top 10 most wanted in the Galaxy, and one of whom it turns out is or was actually GA? On the otherside of the coin exactly what does the crew of the ship most of whom are wanted by the GA in one way or another do when they find their rescue is a GA cop?

Note this imposes a things in reverse element to proceedings.. you would have rescued Jon's new character before you left the EOS-7 system, ie before you re-activated Leon, and before you revived Nyx and Milo from Cryosleep. As I said in the session, as there is today with ships at sea generally being required to respond to SOS and Mayday calls if they are able, there is a requirement under Galactic Law that ships respond to emergency distress beacons if they are able. Thus if you consider yourselves to be the "Good Guys" (Six would very much have pushed for you to respond, Two probably would have concurred, and Three would have been against the whole idea) rescuing those on board one of the EOS-7 escape pods whould have been the "right" thing to do.

Infinite Improbalilities

As we didn't resolve Jon's choice of replacement character until the end of the session, we pick up about 8 hours after leaving the system, the Android having been recharged to the point where, assuming it's nanites had been capable of making nay necessary system repairs from what ever event happend to it, it would be revivable.
With most people assembled in the Engineering Control room where Lisa's recharge cradle resides, Lisa brings the unknown Android online. It looks around the room, then simply says "hello".

I think it was Five who asked him what his name was, to which he responded with "Androids do not have names, only designations."
Three then asked him what his desgination was, to which he responds with SGIARR3BO21G9FN8K7T [GM Note: this forms part of his tattoo, but not in human readable form]
Somebody then asks what do people call him as that's unmanagable, to which he responds "Android".
Somebody then asks about his function to which he responds "Standard Utility Model" to which Two then speculates that they should call him "SUM".

There is then a discussion/conversation with various people asking him questions, although some of these may have been asked prior to this point..
He's asked about his owner, to which he replies that technically he doesn't have one, but does provide the name of his former owner.
I think it was Three who asked about who gave him his last command and what it was, to which he replies "Nyx Harper" and "To load the cargo container onto the ship hiding in the superstructure of Regulus-12" [GM Note: This was actually a lie, although none of you realised it. Nyx and Milo were already in Cryosuspension by this point and Milo was actually not able to predict exactly what would occur on Regulus-12 that would enable them to escape the Seers.]

He's also asked how he met Nyx, to which he replies "She released me during her escape from Hyperion-8". He's then asked why he was on Hyperion-8 to which he responds that he was arreasted and confined by the GA, and that he was scheduled to be destroyed but somehow that never happned. There is then a discussion about why, until James asks what Six would know on the subject, which is relatively easy to resolve since Six would know the relavent Laws under which Androids would be detained and subject to destruction, so it's a simple matter to ask if he was detained under a specific law, to which Leon confirms he was, basically the "flawed operation consistant with the display of behaviour which might be reflective or construed to be passing as human".

He also confirms that he stayed with Nyx in return for her releasing him from his confinement, and that he then helped her free her brother.

It becomes fairly apparent at this point that they really need to talk to at least Nyx, if not her brother as well. People want to shut Leon down but Lisa is very much against the idea. Leon suggests a compromise, he will voluntarily shutdown if they agree to wake him as soon as they have resolved their current insecurities. When they agree with Lisa guarenteeing she will then he goes offline.

Knowing from their own experiences with Nyx from their own reality they decide that reviving Nyx in the confinement chamber in Med bay might be a very good idea, incase she takes an exception to the circumstances of her revival. They move her crypod to med bay, and Lisa initiates the reactivation cycle.
As the cover slides back on the cryopod and she sits up and looks around, her first remarks are "Devon?" a half query half surprised recognition of his presence. He responds with "Yes, Nyx, sort of."

She continues to look about "Portia-Lin, Marcus Boone, Griffen Jone, I recognise from the GA wanted lists. I don't know who the rest of you are. Where am I"
At some point the Razza gets mentioned cause her to ask about Ryo Ashieda, Wexlar, Tash, and Jace Corso whom she associates with being part of the Razza crew. I think it was Two who said something about some of them having met unfortunate ends.

They then ask her about why she picked the Razza, but she said she didn't, she had no idea of where they would end up. It was a plan that her brother had said might lead to them being able to escape the Seers once and for all. In the end she had agreed to it as all other choices eventually ended up with the Seers catching up to them.

With it becomeing more obvious that the person who holds most of the answers to the whys and hows it Milo, they decide to revive him as well.

When Milo awakes he recognises pretty much the same people as his sister with the exception of Devon. His primary interest is in working out exactly where they have ended up. His responses to questions put to him is to question the questions, until they are forced to reveal that himself, his sister, and the Android are now in an Alternate Reality, and that the crew are familiar with both himself and his sister, or at least the versions that existed in this  reality. Eventually he also forces them to reveal that his sister was killed by Ryo Ashieda and that he took his own life rather than be taken back aboard the Seer's ship, and that the Leadership of the Seers no longer exists.
He then explains that all the paths he could see, with the exception of one, eventually led to either their deaths or catpure by the Seers. That one path had a very low probability of success, but it was the only path that didn't lead to re-encounteing the Seers. What it led to he didn't know. He could only see as far as them entering cryopods in a cargo container on the Regulus-12 space station.  He could see scenarios where the station was completely destroyed at that point, but there were voids where he couldn't see.  Eventually he managed to persuade Nyx that if they truelly wanted to be free of the Seers, the path that led to one of those voids was their only option, but he had no idea of what that future would be. He also confirms that as this is a different reality where things have happened differently, such as Emily not being thrown out of the Airlock by Three, and by the Corporate war only having just started, it would take him some time to be able to make any predictions about what the future may hold.

Next Steps??

So normally the only thing that would follow a session log would be house keeping, but in effect we left a number of things hanging, primarily to resolve the replacement character for Jon question.

Potentially the first thing would be the recovery of the escape pod that Jon's character is in, which would take place before what took place this week, and before you left the EOS-7 system. This is in effect that the only occupant of the escape pod is a GA cop and what that may mean..

Then there is the cliff hanger as you left it. Milo sitting in/on his crypod, his sister confined in the containment chamber in Med Bay, and Leon offline in Lisa's charging cradle.

After this we can get to, as Two puts it at the end of episode 1 "First we take back the Blink Drive. Then we kill Ryo Ashieda." and at least how to accomplish the first part of this...
