Session Logs

36: Resurrecting Dallas

Introduction

“What? You mean Bobby Ewing is not dead? It was all just a bad dream?”

As with left things at the end of the last session, assuming that the other elements happened, the events that had occurred meant that the campaign would have to end at the end of Season 3 Episode 5. As Hannah succinctly put it “We broke the game!”.

The start of the session was therefore about a Dallas style reset. Wexlar didn’t die, because instead of tossing him out the Marauder, and leaving him to get nuked with the mining colony, Two just shot him with her stunner and left him comatose in the back of the Marauder. Tash didn’t die because Three decided to be amicable and not attempt to kill Tash which avoided the Android having to stun him to stop him killing her (she technically is part of the crew thus the “and occasionally protecting them from each other” applies.

As I also hinted the Android is particularly loyal to Portia, although technically this doesn’t apply to Lisa because of the events around waking from stasis – remember you woke Lisa from stasis and then had to reboot her, which cleared most of her memories, but not her personality matrix, thus whilst she still had the emotional sub-routines installed by Portia/Two she had no memory of who had made the alteration. Note there are only 2 people who know this currently, Lisa herself, and Five.

There are couple of other things I wanted to note.

Whilst the Blink Drive does allow you to instantly move from place to place, it basically moves you from a point in Normal Space to another point in Normal Space. Whilst you’re in Normal Space you’re detectable, which means you either need to turn your ships’ Transponder off, which is a potential immediate ‘red flag’ or you need to keep switching your Transponder ID (and it’s not been the Unicorn for sometime. Lisa changes it after every station you dock at). One advantage of being in FTL, although the downside is the fuel use, is that whilst in FTL you are undetectable. Note using the Blink Drive does use fuel, 4000l per jump. Remember it takes 2000l to activate the FTL drive plus 2000l per additional ly.

The next relates to something Matt said about “Taking Ryo to Zairon”. So the only person who knows about what Alt-Portia and Alt-Boone said about what happened in the other universe is Ryo (Four) himself, and he doesn’t say anything to anyone else about it. There is also another difference. Four doesn’t have all the memories Alt-Ryo does because of what happened in Stasis, thus he doesn’t know who his old friends are at the Court and who’m he can trust.

The last is a sort of hint for Hannah. Two doesn’t like other people fighting her battles. She also hates being helpless, so her current condition is doubly irksome. The title of the current Episode it called “Going out Fighting”..

Resurrecting Dallas

After a clarification of who is where, Four, Five, Six, and Seven being restrained and guarded in the conference room by Mekei Guards, Trauffett and her body guard on the bridge, a raft of Mekei troopers elsewhere including in Med Bay where Alt-Portia and Alt-Boone are still locked in the Isolation/Containment Chamber, Lisa being offline on the bridge, and Two, Boone and the Android being on the bridge of the Alt-Razza we move forward with Trauffett’s demand for the Blink Drive in exchange for the crew of the Razza.

As I said in the session, Two, even after the Memory Wipe, is not above being duplicitous when the situation demands it.[GM note: just because you’ve turned over a new leaf, in not being the murderous thugs you might have been previously, doesn’t mean your going to be push-overs nor bow to unreasonable demands if there is another way out of the situation. Two would very much know that if Trauffett and Mekei are in control of the Razza then Lisa must be offline, thus she would know that the Android is very much capable of taking control of the Razza if she were docked to it or on-board, thus Traufffett sort of plays into her hands by demanding the drive..]

Two agrees to Trauffett’s demand, except is the Android who boards the Marauder to shuttle across to the Real Razza. Once docked, she neurally links and takes control of the ship, locking Trauffett and the rest of the Mekei forces out of the Razza’s systems. Having taken control of the Razza’s systems, she then powers the ships weapons, both to Trauffett’s and Two’s surprise, and fires a barrage into the aft shield of the Mekei cruiser taking it down and leaving the Cruiser now vulnerable to having its engines and engineering section destroyed.

Trauffett now has no choice but to pull all her people off the Razza and leave. She's not in a position to take on 1 Razza let alone 2!

Once Trauffett and her people are off the ship, Two can ensure Mekei release the Razza crew before they leave, allowing Five etc, to move Lisa to her charging station, and thus bring her back online. Once Lisa is online, the Android will relinquish control and fetch Two and Three from the Alt-Razza. Two can have acquired the Blink Drive without issue at this point, and put Tash and Wexlar in the Medbay Isolation chamber.

Once everyone is on the Real Razza, Lisa will release Alt-Portia and Alt-Boone, and the Android will provide Lisa and Five with the necessary data on how to correctly configure the Spatial Reference matrix of the Blink drive and calibrate it correctly, thus allowing it to operate correctly. The Android will also explain to Lisa, although Five will overhear the exchange, that her loyalty, in particular to Portia, is due to the fact that it was Portia that created her, or specifically it was Portia who modified her programming to give her a rudimentary emotional response [GM Note: It allows her to be more human, not pass as human, as the Illegal upgrade that Lisa has does.]

The Android also agrees to provide two conventional Long Range Missiles when Seven asks..[GM Note: you should have asked for Railgun rounds, they had a far greater stock.]

Lisa and Five then set about installing and calibrating the Blink Drive. Lisa then computes the Navigational Parameters which should allow them to return to their own Universe.

With everything ready, it takes about 3 hours all told, the Razza blinks and returns to its own universe.

As Five begins verifying the Microwave Background Radiation is correct for their Universe, Lisa detects that a small vessel has detached itself from the ship’s hull. When they bring it up on screen it appears to be the Marauder. As they ready weapons to fire, the Marauder accelerates away and then jumps to FTL. There is a chorus of “it shouldn’t be able to do that”, to which Lisa responds “Obviously that one can..”

Attention now turns to other things such as, how long have they been gone, and has their universe been altered by their jump to the alternate reality? Given they are currently on the wrong side of the star they need to move to a position where they can access the station’s data hub, assuming the station still exists. Given that the Blink drive is now operating correctly it doesn’t inhibit the use of the standard FTL engines, they jump back to the vicinity of where the station should be. It is pretty much exactly as they left it.

According to the data hub they time is about 11 hours after they made the Blink Jump, approximately consistent with the total amount of time that has elapsed whilst in the Alternate Universe. They begin accessing the data for other news of event but nothing untoward features on any of the standard channels. However, Lisa notes that there are anomalies in the amount and types of data transmissions coming from the station, pretty much no ‘private’ outbound transmissions.

They decide to dock.

Having requested docking permission, the response from the Station Traffic control is somewhat at odds with their current ship Id "Okay Razza you are cleared to dock as previously, Bay 6B". This sets off all sorts of alarm bells [GM note: I think Matt might have mentioned the GA, but I don’t think anybody mentioned that the Station might be under lockdown.] They try the comms for Devon and Nyx but neither answer. Emily(Five) now hacks the station security and surveilance system and determines that Devon is in Intensive care in the Infirmary under GA guard and that about 2 hours after they left to test the Blink Drive the station was put into Lockdown, which was then lifted about 2 hours later.[GM Note: This is the Station Security Hub, not the GA Hub!]
Varrick (Six) knows what the 'standard' GA operation is likely to be in this situation. They are most likely to attempt to ambush anybody entering the main section of the station at the security check point. All stations generally have a 'transit' ring which allow crew, personel, passengers, and cargo to move around the perimeter of the station without being subject to the security checks pertinent to the Main Station itself. This allows crew, personel, passengers, and cargo to transit freely (not quite the transit ways are monitored, and station security generally takes a dim view of infractions and incidents in the transit ring) between docked ships.

With a GM prompt, given that they used a section of this station in the Alternate Universe, they know where one of the Maintenance airlocks is, and what the Access codes for the airlock are. Assuming that there are no differences between Universes, then the codes should be valid here. It just requires Emily to mess with the Surveilance system to leave the GA blind as to what is happening, whilst the Marauder docks with the Maintenance Airlock and the assault team, consiting of  Three,Four, and Seven (because of his Paramedic Skill), go rescue Devon, and attempt to locate Nyx. Once they are actually on-board the station, Nyx will actually respond to their personal Comms, and meet them several levels above where they dock enroute to the Infirmary. [GM Note: Whilst the station security staff will attempt to intervene, as you're all carrying guns, they only have Shock Sticks at their disposal, which makes them sitting ducks as you're either using stun Pistols or the Stun Pulse Rifles you got from the Seers - You do have to be careful with these as the Energy clips for these only hold 18 charges and you have no spare clips. You do have spare clips for the Stun Pistols. It's interesting to note in the TV series the GA don't use Stun Pistols, they invariable use Heavy Pistols or Assault Rifles even when they want to take people alive...]

The away team down the GA guards, guarding Devon, plus a few inconvenient staff who get in the way. They transfer Devon to a gurney, and then leave, taking the Intensive care drugs trolley with them. More security guards and the GA attempt to cut them off, but with Emily in control of the Security System, the GA are in the dark as to what really is going on, whilst she can keep the away team advised on approaching forces. They return the Marauder and then make their way back to the Razza as it undocks from the station. Once the Marauder docks Lisa jumps to FTL enroute to the closest star 7ly away (15hour jump)

[GM Note: In the TV series, Devon actually dies and no one knows what happened to him. I chose for a different outcome to occur and had one of the space station workers, yes I got this wrong in the session, find him, and call the authorities, which results in him being transferred to the Station Infirmary. aving no idea who he is they run a  DNA scan, which  flags him as wanted by the GA. Once the GA became aware of who he is then they initiate the lockdown of the Station. It was after the initiation of the lockdown that Nyx goes to ground, although not without determining that Devon is in the Infirmary under GA guard.
After the rescue of Nyx and Devon, in the TV series it’s just the collection of Nyx, from the station, Ryo’s and Nyx’s relation ship reaches a new level, they’re now sort-of sleeping with one another, although its all unofficial and neither wants anybody else to know about it.
This leads to an ‘Incident’ at breakfast the following morning. Five and Three are in the Mess hall eating, when Ryo and then about 30 seconds later Nyx enter. Note part of this is Five’s view that if they are a family they should behave like one and actually bother to eat together. As Ryo and Nyx are organising their breakfast, Three comments that “They were really going hard at it last night”. Both Ryo and Nyx react like startled rabbits, asking what he means. He then says “I was passing the Exercise Room last night and saw you both going hard at it.”
Ryo and Nyx then go “Oh”, with Nyx then saying “Yes with staves and swords”.
Three, now sporting a very mischievous grin, then says “So, you’ve not got to hand-to-hand and grappling yet then?”
At this point Five gets up and leaves somewhat embarrassed by the inuendo in the conversation…]

Discussions turn to what next, and the subject of Two's collapse on the Alt-Razza comes up, and that she might need some new nanites, which means Dwarfstar.

When Emily had fought Portia(Two) to stop her fully neurally linking to the Razza and taking over the ship, in the background had been a very striking building (Left Image:Concept Art) in the background. She had produced a sketch of building and later ran it through image processing and recognition software, which identified it as the Dwarfstar HQ on Terra Prime(Earth). They decide they need to pay Dwarfstar a visit even if Terra Prime is 187ly from their current position. They drop out of FTL and activate the Blink Drive, appearing near Earth.

Emily asks Lisa whether it would be possible to use the Blink Drive with the Marauder. Lisa thinks that it's theoretically possible.  The field the drive itself emits should be large enough to encompass the Marauder, its then just a question of whether the Marauder can generate enough power to power the drive and whether the Nav anc engine controls will interface. They begin to look into the problem.
Now at this point everyone started second guessing themselves, trying to plan how to get into the DwarfStar HQ without knowing anything about it. It took some none to subtle hints that they should take the Maraduer down and actually take a look at the HQ building, rather than guessing based on Emily's sketch. It's not until the Marauder gets close that Emily is able to discern that the HQ building is actually the anchor for a Space Elevator.

The problem is this just leads to more second guessing, going in from orbit via the 'counter weight' without knowing anything about the 'counter weight'..
