Session Logs

25: I love it when a plan comes together

Introduction

For the last few logs I've not really had any idea how to start them. I did this week, at least on Wednesday, but it's been a busy week and I've actually forgotten how I was going to start, but in coming up with the title I have a slightly different opening, as technically the title doesn't reflect anything the players did directly, but they did of their own accord solve how I was going to get the next episode of the season into play, given the unfortunate demise of One in the Ashieda scenario when they tried to originally take Ryo back to Zairon. This removed a particular plot line which I've had to sort of work around with a semi-substitute, although Six does need to re-reed any notes he has from the Escape from Hyperion-8 scenario and specifically in relation to certain information Ander's gave him shortly before the escape.

One thing I am aware of is that there hasn't been much "die rolling" in the last few sessions. This is partly because the dice gods have a habit of screwing things up, and not being able to escape from Hyperion-8 or Five not being able to resolve the "I've seen the other Side of You" scenario would have totally finished things, as would her completely failing to swap the "Key Card" after Arax stole it. BTW this does mean you can now in theory watch the first 3 episodes of season 2 if you're so inclined.

Its also worth noting that Four(Ryo) gets to feature a bit more in the next couple of scenarios but not necessarily as a slice and dice machine, more in relation to Nyx, or should that be a relationship with Nyx?

My next problem is to actually try and remember what happened....

I love it when a plan comes together

First order of the evening was to cover off Nyx's initial interaction with Ryo, a few days before they reach the "middle of no where". Waiting until Ryo is in the dojo practising his katas as is his want she wanders in and asks "So how would you do against a real opponent".Ryo's response is "pretty well" to which Nyx's responds "lets see"

She picks up a Staff off the rack and attacks. A little to Ryo's surprise she's pretty much able to match him blow for blow, both blocking his attacks and scoring a few of her own. They spar for a few minutes before Nyx backs off. With a little GM prompting Ryo asks how long she's been training for, to which Nyx responds "With this? When did I pick it up? About 4 minutes ago?"

With a few more prompts Ryo picks up a pair of swords and throws one of them the Nyx. Again they spar for several minutes, Ryo managing to get behind her with his sword to her throat. He backs away and they resume, Nyx managing to nick his chin with her sword, at which poing she backs away.  She then comments "When I fight its like things slow down, I can guess my opponents moves. Not always but more often than not I'm right." Despite Hannah shouting "How", with a similar chorus from the others Ryo doesn't actually ask her how, although she does say as she departs the dojo "Maybe if I'm around long enough, I'll get a chance to tell you. "

We then move to the main order of the day as it were, which is the events in and around the Space Station and the very necessary pitstop for repairs and supplies. Whilst the station can do the repairs to the Razza, which is a 5 day job, there is a 2 day delay, as they only have one repair bay and they are currently finishing up another job.  There is then a discussion as to how to divide people up such that the guests are accompanied onto the station. The eventual decision is that Portia and Emily will go and sort out fuel and other such items, Six and Arax will go and sort out the water and replacement Iso tank container, Boone and Nyx will go and sort out food supplies and booze, and Seven and Devon will go shopping for medical supplies.
As Portia and Emily are preparing to depart Lisa approaches them and asks if she can go with them. When they ask why she says that "she wishes to observe human behaviour and it has been suggested to her that the behaviour of the crew of the Razza is atypical behaviour|". They agree suggesting that a "Make over" is therefore in order. Lisa doesn't exactly understand this.

Everybody heads off onto the station to carry out their assigned tasks. Arax manages to convince Six that he has people he needs to see, and having a GA cop, even possibly an Ex Cop in tow just isn't going to work, and negotiates a "1 hour" window to do what he needs to. Six reports this back to Portia. He is back at the designated meeting place within the hour.

Portia and Emily sort out the fuel and other sundries then take Lisa for her make over. She's a little over awed and self conscious. When Portia and Emily head back to the ship she asks if she can remain for a while to continue her observations. Portia and Emily don't see why not.

Boone and Nyx complete their food shopping, and Boone suggests they go get a drink. They find a bar, although there's not much to choose between most of them. They have been in the bar a while when Nyx comments on a group of men sitting at another table who seem to be very interested in Boone, so much so that as she does so they get up and wander over.

Boone is about to go into 'Merc Mode' when the leader, an older guy says, "Tich. Is that really you Tich after all this time?"
Boone comments he has no idea of what they're talking about. The leader continues "So it's true then, the memory loss, what the GA did to you in prison, you don't remember us."
Boone concurs, as they invite themselves to the table, "It has been a while. You know we thought you were dead. Saw you go down but couldn't get to you. Then you sort of disappeared. Head nothing so we thought you was gone. "
Boone asks what they want have they got some sort of job lined up. The older man says "Hey look, this is not a time to talk about work. Lets get us some drinks and celebrate." He gets up and heads to the bar.
Nyx says "I'll see you back at the ship." and gets up and leaves.
One of the others says "You may not remenber but he was like a father to you. He raised you as his own. Now you may have forgotten that, but he sure as hell hasn't."

When the older guy returns with the drinks Boone asks about his parents. The older guy replies "your parents were good hard working folk. Took a chance hiring a drifter like me when no one else would. What happened to them was a tragedy."
"I was on my way back from the tavern. I smelled the smoke before I saw it.The house, the barn, everything up in flames. By the time I got there your parents were dead.I fished you out of the back of your mom's closet where she'd hidden you. Probably the last thing she ever did."
As Matt didn't ask any of the obvious questions at this point I moved things on. Yes they had a job, Meet them at dock 3C3 at 04:30 in the morning. Boone returns to the ship.

The last to return to the ship is Lisa. In addition to the outfits Portia and Emily purchased for her she also has an haute couture fashion house bag with her [GM note: Yes there was one on the station, you sort of have to know where it is, which is not on the typical levels used by the majority of the population/visitors]. When they enquire as to where she got it she just says a friend brought it for her but doesn't say any more [GM Note: I think you did sort of get it, uncharacteristic evasive behaviour not typical of normal Android behaviour, but then Lisa doesn't appear to conform to the normal paradigms of Android behaviour, something that both Varrik and Emily know something of]

Time passes and we move to the following morning. Boone heads off for his rendevous, initially going to takes stunners until a not too subtle hint from the GM suggested that that doesn't fit with his "hard merc" image!

Not much else happens through out the day. Boone is travelling and everyone else is cooling their heels. The only item of note is that Arax starts to pay particular attention to Emily and her movements, something which she completely misinterprets the reason for, although having grown up on the streets the misinterpretation is reasonable, except that why hadn't he done so during the journey from the prison to the space station? It takes some very strong GM hints that there might be a completely different reason more aligned with something that Emily has, although at this point its in one of the lock boxes in the vault.

Boone and his companions make planet fall, the older guy whose name is Tanner, dropping Boone and 3 of the others on the edge of one of the towns whilst he goes elsewhere. They head into the woods to what have been a pre-arranged site and setup camp for the night. Boone asks about the job. Its a payroll heist, 6 way split. Boone asks what makes them so sure it'll happen. They same thay have some insurance the shuttle pilots son who's at the cabin with Tanner. Boone is both uncomfortable and uneasy but says nothing further on the subject.

We move to the following morning. Emiliy goes shopping on the station to acquire components to install a hidden video surveilance, monitoring, and notification system, in her room. Components acquired she sets about building and installing it.

Elsewhere on the planet the group of nare do wells wait for the arrival of the shuttle pilot who appears to be late. One of them, Gar, comments he'll show if he wants his son back. As he does so the pilot shows up but doesn't appear to have the payroll.
Fellows:"Where's the shuttle?"
Pilot:"About a half mile south west of here. But I want to see my son first."
Fellows:"Your son's safe."
Pilot:"I want to see him."
Fellows: "You get you son when we get the payroll. That was the deal."
Pilot "Payroll is in the shuttle, and the shuttle is sealed, and I won't open it until I see my son."
Fellows (to Lands): "You figure we can blow the doors with the charges?"
Lands (nods): "Sure"
Fellows shoots the pilot.
Gar (putting his hands around Three to restrain him): "Easy. Easy. His boy's safe. He's safe back at the cabin with Tanner. We're good."
Lands, Gar, and Fellows walk off.
Three grabs his things, then stops by the body of the pilot, then follows the others, but he's struggling with his consciounce and starts to drop back.
The three of them stop and turn round. Gar "You're not going to give us any trouble are you Titch?". As his hand moves towards his gun, Boone draws and fires. 3 bodies grumple to the ground.
Boone divests them of their weapons but they'd pretty poor quality and not that well maintained. They also don't have much cash. Boone checks Land's pack and retrieves the charges. They're shapped with simple timers, so he should be able to use them to gain entry to the shuttle.

Having retrieved the payroll he makes his way through the woods to the cabin, about 5 miles away. When he gets there Tanner is in the cabin with a boy who's about 8 years old. The boy is eating a meal. With a not too subtle hint from the GM [GM Note: even Boone is not hartless enought to send an 8 year old boy out into the middle of nowhere in a forest. Evil Boone might have sold him...] he sends the boy with his food into the back room and tells him to wait.

Tanner remains seated watching Boone. Boone sits down on the opposite side of the table where the boy was sitting.
Tanner: "So you got the payroll then?"
Boone: "Yes"
Tanner: "Have any trouble with the pilot?"
Boone: "Pilot's dead."
Tanner: "Shit."
Boone: "Got anything else to say?"
Tanner: "What about? Your Parents? Yes I killed them, but you knew that all the time."
Boone shoots him without drawing his gun under the table. He then stands. "You're not really worth anything are you". He puts a second bullet through his brain. He then turns picks up the payroll and his gear then fetch the boy from the back room. With another GM hint he takes him back to town leaving him about a mile from his house with 50K from the payroll. He then goes in search of a taxi service to take him back to the space port. [GM Note: There is other stuff revealed in the TV Series but Matt didn't generate the questions to generate the answer to get this]

Back on the Razza, Arax breaks into Emily's room and searches it, eventually finding her hidden box, which he realises he can't actually open at this point. He puts it back in place. Emily in conjunction with Lisa now realises that Arax is most likely after the Keycard. She makes up a fake key card and a pair of sleeves. She puts the real keycard in a sleeve in the box, whilst retaining the otherone herself.

Time ticks on. Boone makes it to the spaceport and arranges transport back to the spacestation. Arax now equiped with what he needs breaks into Emily's room again, retrieves the box opens it and removes the keycard. He checks the card and appears to be satisfied its what he's looking for, He locks the box once more and replaces it where it was. He leaves Emily's room and head towards the lower deck and the airlock where he bumps into Emily who appears to be not paying attentions dancing to something she's listening too on her head phones. She retrieves the keycard from his pocket. He apologizes for the accident although she says its nothing and gives him a hug dropping the fake keycard back into his pocket. He leaves the Razza.

Boone arrives back on the Razza, and repairs completed, and stores replenished the Razza leaves the space station. Arax is not on board.

The question then moves to where next. This is the discussion I remember least about despite the fact its the one that neatly takes us into the next episode. Now I think it was James who plays Varrik(Six) who started talking about the GA but as a player without Varriks actual knowledge, hence why as GM I made the suggestion as Varrik does in the series when asked, although the actual circumstances are a little different, that an out of the way GA station, which is most likely to be overworked and understaffed is the way to go. This does mean a 33ly FTL jump to another station which is pretty much as we left things, the Razza en route after leaving the last station with Arax on it behind. There are a few more things to come next week, and most likely not what you're expecting...
