12: Choo! Choo! Narative Express Coming Through!
|
Introduction
It has always been the case since I started this campaign that there
would come a point where I simply wouldn't be able to continue because
the Players had done or not done something that would take them so far
away from the TV series storyline that I wouldn't be able to continue.
The missing One, Two, Three love triangle has never really been an
issue, and whilst the loss of One this early is an inconvenience and
potentially takes a whole future storyline out of the equation, tonight
came very close to breaking point, and not because the Dice Gods
threatened to leave the whole Party Unconscious on the Traugott
Research Station.
How close well very, but I had just enough space to play the
Narative Imperative card and really throw the cat amongst the pigeons
when I did so, although they still did and are doing their utmost to
wreck everything. A certain amount hinges on Five following the GM
Hint/Note that will be at the end of the actual log for the session.
And yes Matt, I was completely relying for part of what was going to
happen on the fact that you had forgotton that Three had 2 Armscorp
Blaster Rifles, one of which had no charge and one which had half
charge. But there was also another factor that none of you remembered.
The crates of weapons that didn't go to the Miners (there were 10 in
total originally including the crate with the Armscorp Blasters in it,
and you gave 4 crates to the Miners excluding the one with the Blaster
Rifles in), and that the Real Jace Corso didn't take (the crate with
the 2 Armscorp rifles in and 2 others) are still out in the open in the
cargo hold (according to my maths that's 3 crates).
Choo! Choo! Narrative Express coming through!
Continuation of combat didn't quite go according to plan, with first Seven, and then Four failing to parry attacks and being rendered unconscious. Two did manage to put down her target and take the shock stick off him as he fell, using it to render two of the guards unconscious before Tash also failed to parry and went down. This basically left Two and Cain standing, Two thankfully managing to render both the remaining two guards unconscious without either herself or Cain failing to parry the Guard's attacks.
It was then just a matter of Two and Cain, with some assistance from Six, dragging and carrying unconscious crew onto the Marauder, before returning to the Razza, where upon Two instructs Lisa to "get them the hell out of here".
At this point I played the first minor "Narrative" element and had Wexlar meet them in the Upper Deck corridor, firstly to confirm they actually had managed to get the device, and secondly to have the minor argument with Two ove storing the Trolley and the device in the Vault. When Three queried why Lisa had let Wexlar out, she simply replied that "With everyone returning to the Razza, and with Wexlar's injuries making him no threat to her, she saw no reason to confine him to the isolation chamber in sick bay, thus she let him out".
Note there is a significant element of logic at play here in Lisa's behaviour (You need to remember she is an Android and they generally function on a purely logical level based on the available data). Wexlar and his crew are a fundamental part of the retrieval mission. None of their behaviour so far had done anything to warrent them being classed as a threat (they came on board unarmed), even after Two had broken Wexlar's wrist and arm, and fractured his ribs. She also doesn't exactly understand the "well he had it coming" argument as to her mind the punishment was disproportional to any potential threat or behaviour towards Two. She therefore just doesn't understand Three intense paranoia towards Wexlar and his crew, thus she would take the instructions given at the completely logical level, which primarily meant that unless she perceived a threat from Wexlar or his crew then would behave accordingly.
Once everyone regained consciousness things started to get a little tricky and it was only Two's insistance that they adhere to the agreement with Wexlar that they would have a 'celebration drink' (just the one mind) with Wexlar and his crew that gave me any sort of opening to play the "Narrative Card" to enact the required element of the storyline.
Thus Cain and Tash go to the Mess hall, as do Four, Six, Three,
Seven, and initially Two. Five remains in her room, which from a
narrative perspective was just a minor inconvenience. Tash says Vons
will be along shortly.
When Wexlar doesn't turn up, Two decides to go to the bridge and discovers Lisa down and unconscious, and broardcasts a message over the crews comms to this affect, before Wexlar renders her unconscious as well.
Three having brought his stunners with him, because well he was totally paranoid and didn't trust Wexlar further than he could throw them, as a result stands draws the stunners and attempts to shoot both Cain and Tash. Now the dice gods worker both for and against him at this point. The natural 1 meant the shot against Cain resulted in a Stunner malfunction, whilst Tash failed her Dodge roll and was thus stunned. Of course Vons arrival just as Three stands and fires means that he just shoots eveyone with the Blaster, Cain having dived away from the table in response to Three's attempt to shoot him.
Five in her room reacts by locking down the command systems, effectively locking the Razza into it's FTL trajectory set by Lisa. Remember Two had said to Lisa to "get us out of here" thus all this takes place with the Razza in FTL!
Five is retrieved (well stunned unconscious) a few minutes later by Wexlar and Cain.
Two comes around first finding herself in the Airlock with Wexlar on the otherside of the door. He is a little purturbed at her unexpected early recovery as means he has to wait around whilst the rest of her crew recover.
When they come round they find themselves secured to chairs in the conference room, looking at the screen showing Two in the airlock and a cut-in of Wexlar on the other side of it. Cain and Vons are standing by the door ensuring they don't attempt anything.
Once 'awake' Wexlar demands the lockdown code for the Razza systems and the Vault or Two goes out the airlock. There is the usual mouthyness from the characters before Wexlars says he will give them "one more chance" to give him the codes. He begins to count down from five... (I even delayed the time between two and one). No one gives him the code (unlike in the TV series where Three tells him the Vault code), so he hits the button to eject Two into space (well the FTL envelope in this case, which as everyone knows means "instant death", as you can't go outside the ship during FTL transit).
Wexlar then returns to the conference room, and once again demands the lockdown codes to the Razza Systems and the Vault.
Nobody is forthcoming, and Seven decides to get "lippy" until he finally says "If you kill us you'll never get the codes". Wexlar considers for a moment then says "You're partially correct. If I kill all of you" indicating everyone except Five "then I can't collect your bounties by turning you over to the GA. However" and he moves around to where Five is restrained "the same is not true for her". He grabs her around the head.
Seven at this point tries to claim that's she's nothing more than a "servant/galley/sex slave", and Five saying she doesn't know anything because she "was just a stowaway" confirming what he already suspects, given that Five was completely able to understand all his notes for how to get into the Vault and then improvise a solution when things didn't go according to plan. In response he says "No she's more than that, if she was just a stowaway then she'd have been spaced, so I'll ask again, the codes please".
Seven again gets lippy and continues when Wexlar threatens to have Cain shoot him if he doesn't shut up. He doesn't so Cain shoots him in the arm, and when he says" is that the best you can do, it meerly tickles" shoots him again this time in the shoulder. Wexlar meanwhile takes out his knife and holds it against Fives face.
At this point all except Seven try and break their restraints, so
Vons stuns them all unconscious. Wexlar then frees Five from the
restraints holding her in the chair, and gets Cain to drag her to her
feet. Seven makes some more lippy comments and Vons stuns him
unconscious as well
Wexlar then gets Cain to drag Five to the main console on the bridge and tells her to unlock the console. She gives him some lip. Wexlar tells her "to unlock the console or he'll give her to Vons and his sister to play with". She gives him more lip so he punches her hard in the face, breaking her brovado (note Five would have known that it requires two flag officers to enable the self-destruct, and although she gave herself the privilage - not that anyone except Lisa knows this, thus she wouldn't have been able to enact the self-destruct after unlocking the console which was Paul's original intent when she caves in. He is however correct that for all her "street kid" upbringing, Five is still only 15 3/4 and thus for all her brovado she isn't actually that tough and would have caved at this point; she can only endure so much. Also don't forget the emotional impact of having seen Two spaced by Wexlar). Five unlocks the console, which Cain then drags her away from.
At this point the Razza drops unexpectedly out of FTL and a whole raft of warnings come up on the console display.
We will pick up on Tuesday at this point!!!!!
GM notes and hints time, explicitly for Five. Five will immedieately
recognise a number of those warnings. She's seen them before when the
main reactor power coupling failed. When Wexlars asks her "what the F
just happened", she need to say she doesn't actually know but she may
have an idea but needs to run a diagnostic to confirm if she's correct.
Wexlar will watch her like a hawk so she will just run the diagnostic,
which will confirm that one of the main reactor power couplings is
down. Wexlar is going to get upset and ask her how the hell she did it,
so she's going to need to say it has nothing to do with her and that's
its happened before. Wexlar is going to want to know how to fix it, to
which Five is going to need to respond by saying that somebody needs to
go outside to fix it. Wexlar is going to get even more upset and Five
is going to need to say that last time it happened they sent the
Android outside to fix it..
