It has been a long week and when I finally do get to sit down, to take a break and update this journal I find myself sitting under one of the biggest trees in the multiverse. Sounds nice you might say this tree though it’s growing indoors, in a room the size of a football stadium. Oh yes and the football stadium is in the center of a castle and castle is under siege. Some times I have all the luck.
Just to make things more interesting sharing the football stadium with the tree and me is a Pattern. Yes that’s right the type with a capital P that’s to distinguish it from the kind of pattern you have on your clothes. Anyway it takes up more than half the room in here, it was drawn at the end of the first pattern war by Corwin and it forms a point of true reality or some such. What that means exactly I don’t have a clue other than that its important and the fact that they built a castle around it and that there are a lot of people outside trying to get in sort of gives that away.
Anyway those of the Blood of Amber can gain strange powers by walking the pattern from its outer edge to its center. I wonder if I am the first one ever to decline the opportunity to do so, power seems to hold a strong attraction for most people. Not that I am immune to that, its just I have had a long week.
I do not know how long has passed since I left home, but I am calling it a ‘long week’ lets hope its not much more than that. Being insane makes it impossible to keep track of time. You might say time keeping is the last thing on your mind.
The reason I have just declined to walk the pattern is that I traversed the Logrus last week and it has left me with a healthy respect where messing around with universal powers is concerned. Basic Logrus walking tips 1) It hurts, 2) It will try to kill you, 3) It will try really hard, 4) If it can’t kill you it might make you stronger, but it will definitely drive you insane (hopefully only temporarily) and 5) It hurts. So if walking the Pattern is anything like that, well I have done my bit this month.
Why did I walk the Logrus then, well the answer to that is simple, Dierdre asked me to. Though in fairness the attraction of strange new powers might have had something to do with it.
Dierdre, my long lost mother who I have not seen in over a decade. Turned up one evening while the world was rehearsing for Armageddon and I was trying my hand at disaster management and drafted me to help a band of hero’s on their desperate quest to save the multiverse from destruction. Dierdre said that they needed my help and that unless they succeeded the universe would go to wrack and ruin and the Ice demons that where beginning to reappear in Phehenomy would come in greater and greater numbers and destroy everything.
Not really a lot of choice there really is there.
So after I agreed to help out, Dierdre got me to traverse the Logrus and when I got my sanity back we sat down and had a long talk.
The conversation was not short; Blood of Amber, Courts of Chaos, Pattern War, The Serpent, Logrus, Pattern, and Trump. What I wanted to know was why didn’t anyone mention any of this before now. It turns out Dierdre had a good answer for that as well. It was a long story involving a treacherous brother, who attempted to destroy and remake the universe. It seems that before he was stopped, he had stabbed Dierdre and pushed her into The Abyss, which is a bottomless, well abyss at the edge of reality. After falling for a long time she was rescued by the Serpent but she had been out of circulation for a while.
Using the Logrus Power Dierdre sent me across shadow to where the team that was the universes last hope was already hard at work.
