I saw the
black tower, waving like a mirage.
I held my sword tightly, preparing to arrive with boldness and style
then there was a flash of purple, colours of red and blue danced before
my eyes and then with a terrific burst of pain, I blacked out.
I burst into the room inside the black tower with a flash of light and sparkles, my sword point unwavering, directly pointed at Deidre. So intimidated was she by my grand arrival and bravado that she immediately fell upon her knees and told me all that I wanted to know. That was the plan. The reality turned out a little different; I awoke on my back in so much pain I could hardly comprehend where I was let alone what had happened. I felt like every one of my bones was broken, every inch of skin bruised; I had a headache so large it was a wonder my skull didn't burst. A woman handed me pills with a glass of water and I took them gladly, hoping them to be pain killers, and passed out once more.
30 minutes later I woke again, my pain had subsided a bit. The woman who had given me the pills was still by me, she was Deidre’s daughter and her name was Sorcha. Deidre was in the room as well, apparently I had teleported to the roof of the black tower and she had saved me. She said I was lucky that she had noticed me else I'd have died out there; the pain was so bad that I wasn't sure that would have been a bad thing.
My head was
still fuzzy but I was determined to get my answers, and so I questioned
Deidre everything I could think to ask, about fixing the pattern and
the shadow worlds, about the book of prophecies and the serpent and the
unicorn.
I became satisfied that Deidre was the real Deidre, or however close a
Deidre Logrus can get to Deidre the Amberite. I also formulated a new
plan, it wasn’t perfect but it’s something. To save
Japan I must fix the pattern. To fix the pattern I must find the book
of prophecies. To find the book of prophecies I must find Dworkin -
whom held it last, and to find him I must go back to Cordelia who
should have a deck of cards which are trumps of the family which she
can use to contact Dworkin, who is her great grandfather. Brand can
apparently track the trumps so that part could be dangerous... When we
have the book we can find the unicorn, we will have to take the
serpents eye (its horn) by force or trickery as it will not want to
give it up. We will also have to use a special blade, this means
borrowing the sword of prince Corwin or Brand. That part could be
difficult but let’s focus on the first task of finding
Dworkin! I’m not sure if I could bring myself to take a
unicorn’s horn, if they are the creatures of pure innocence
as they are in the stories from home, perhaps if it is intelligent we
could convince it to let us take the horn for the greater good.
Diary, I am
ready to return to my companions
with my information, but I am trapped here until I can learn to walk
the shadows. Deidre has taught me some basics and I have practiced
walking the pattern in my mind and looking through the pattern which
has to be done outside of the tower.
I’ve also met a new amberite who’s in a similar
situation to myself (except as I’ve been trying to save our
worlds, he’s been lounging here in the tower!). His name is
Damon and seems friendly, maybe a little too friendly. He believes his
mother was from Earth so I gather he must have an Amberite father and
be my cousin or half-brother.
