The Keep of the Thirteenth Hour

Heroes of the Hour - Kohaku Mori

Kohaku's History

Background

Born in the small village of Birchwood, in a world filled with Mogwai, creatures with powers and magic that roam the lands, seas and sky and, mostly, live in harmony with people. These creatures can be caught with Waistars and trained to fight for their trainers in Mogwai battles and become powerful travelling companions and good friends.

It was here that Kohaku was born, raised by her single mother who was the villages Mogwai gym leader. When Kohaku was old enough to ask of her father she was told that he was a travelling musician who sadly died crossing the sea when he was surprised by a vicious storm. Yuki wouldn't say much about Kohaku's father and after a while Kohaku learnt not to ask.

Whilst growing up she practiced jujitsu with her mother and her Mogwai each day before attending school. She particularly excelled in Mogwai lessons and spent much of the rest of the day in her mother's gym where she watched courageous Mogwai trainers challenge her mother to Mogwai battles in their attempt to win a “Brawl” badge for their collections.

As the village gym leader, Yuki often helped the local police tackle crime with the assistance of her powerful Mogwai. It was during one of these times that Kohaku gained her very first Mogwai; Yuki had been investigating some Mogwai smugglers from the underground criminal gang that called itself Team Pyro. Team Pyro specialised in stealing powerful or rare Mogwai and selling them on to the highest bidder, an atrocious crime. Yuki had her Mogwai follow the criminal to their hideout and report back, Yuki and the police then ambushed the hideout and saved all the Mogwai which were returned to their joyful owners. All, that is, except one, a young Flamepup[growlithe], a striped, dog-like creature about 2” high with the ability to breath fire. The flamepup's owner was a young boy named Aoi who had acquired a new Mogwai after he lost his flamepup in a nearby woods, his new Mogwai was tougher than the Flamepup and impressed his friends and so Aoi had no interest in looking after his old Mogwai. His parents tried to find the Mogwai a new home, however the time in team Pyro's clutches had made her timid and aggressive and so nobody would take her. In the end the Father left the Mogwai with Yuki; demanding that as the village gym leader and most experienced Mogwai trainer, she should take the responsibility of the little terror.

Yuki didn't know what to do with the young flamepup, who would stand in the corner shaking and growling. But Kohaku, aged 9 years old, took a shine to her. With much patience (and a little pain), Kohaku managed to tame the Flamepup - now named Scarlett into an exemplary Mogwai and they eventually became inseparable.

When Kohaku was 14 she left school and helped out permanently at her mother's gym. It was during this time that she decided to become a Mogwai trainer and often practiced with the trainers who came to challenge her mother for the Brawl badge. She also spent time at the Mogwai center, where she helped nurse wounded Mogwai back to health.

She knew it was her mother's intent to prepare her to take over as fighting gym leader one day, however it was Kohaku's dream to travel the region, challenging gym leaders and collecting the 8 badges required to qualify to take on “the elite 4”, a team of 4 of the regions very best Mogwai trainers which must be beaten consecutively. Despite Kohaku's wanderlust she grew too comfortable in the little village with her family and friends and didn't leave until she was 21, after Aoi, the young boy who previously owned Scarlett – now a young man - grew jealous at how obedient and powerful the Mogwai he had given away had become. He started to insist that Scarlett was his and should be returned to him but when Kohaku refused he became violent. The village police had confirmed to Kohaku that Aoi no longer had any rights to Scarlett but this did little to calm Kohaku. She knew that Aoi and his parents had influence over some unpleasant people and had been receiving worrying threats. She began to fear what may happen to her and Scarlett if they stayed in Birchwood much longer.

And so for the safety of Scarlett and herself she bid her mother farewell and left the village under the cover of night, promising to come back one day when she was powerful enough to fear no one. She started to live out her dream and spent her days on the road either camping or at Inns. She challenged Mogwai trainers and gyms and had collected her very first badge when Scarlett evolved from a Flamepup into a Blazehound. She was now large enough for Kohaku to ride and powerful enough to help Kohaku catch her second Mugwai, a Zapchu[Pikachu]; a large(about 1.4”), yellow mouse-like creature capable of harnessing the power of electricity which Kohaku named Static. After some training, Scarlett and Static became a great team, and Kohaku won 3 more gym badges. She intends to win 4 more and finally tackle the famous elite 4 before returning home to Birchwood to live in peace and maybe then take over her mother as Birchwood's Mogwai gym leader.
