After all of the excitement I was hoping for a slight break, but it seemed that that wasn't going to happen.
It seems that the surrounding army was beginning to act. A thick fog was building up on the other side of the cavern, and billowing down into the canyon itself.
Obviously this was some tactic to avoid us seeing what they were doing. I started casting a spell to blow away the fog. This had some effect and eventually managed to stop the fog, but I couldn't push it back. It did mean, however, that it only reached out across half of the canyon, so at least they couldn't cross all of the canyon without being spotted.
The spell was tiring however, and Charity had another idea - to turn off magic in this shadow. I stopped my spell, and she altered the laws of the shadow. The fog would start lifting on its own now, but would take some time.
Drum beats had started from the canyon floor, and from the track down the cliff face on the far side. Obviously something was happening, but we weren't sure what.
Eventually a few carts were seen. They were trundling along the canyon floor, crossing the river on pontoon bridges. Without magic I could do nothing against them.
I did have the idea of trying to napalm them however. Not a good idea - it seems that the demons can travel much faster than our microlights, and the vehicle and its pilot were quickly overcome before it could get to the safety of the citadel. I'll remember not to do that again. At least we'd only sent out one.
So now there is little that I can do. It will start getting dark in a few hours, so I think that I'll nap now, to be ready for when they do attack.
