Wolfen

Introduction

The Conversion Book indicates that there are 13 Wolfen Tribes but all other sources indicate 12, which is the number I use in my campaign. There are a few other details missing which are detailed below.

Clans and Tribes

The 12 tribes are aligned into 5 clans. The second most powerful clan is headed by the most powerful tribe, whilst the situation is reversed for the most powerful clan. These two clans are bitter rivals with the other three changing alliegance according to the situation. The third rank clan tends to favour the second ranked, whilst the other two the 1st ranked. Short of a civil war the situation is unlikely to change.
The Clans and Tribes in order of rank are:-
  Clan   Family
  Byhrjk   Byhrjk(1), Kyvrjk(8), Zybrjk(7)
  Xzzyn   Xzzyn(2), Kjvyn(4), Rjxyn(12)
  Gjvyx   Gjvyx(3), Ryxyx(9)
  Glajx   Glajx(5), Xzzjx(11)
  Njjhjr   Njjhjr(6), Ljjhjr(10)

Ljagquee (pronounced le-ja-g-quee)

Most Wolfen are members of both a Tribe and a Clan. Wolfen who distinguish themselves in the fields of Magic, Theology, and on Rifts Earth Technology and Science can become Ljagquee or 'Outside the Clans'. These Wolfen are looked upon by all Wolfen as advisors, elders, and spiritual leaders no matter what the Ljagquee's originating family or clan. Ljagquee are all at least 9th level in their chosen field and are awarded and wear a 'Circlet of the Clans'.

VazDjKy (pronounced vaz-duj-keye)

These are Wolfen of neither tribe nor clan, expelled from Wolfen society for crimes against that society. Amongst Wolfen they are easy to recognise, firstly they have no circlet (all Wolfen have and wear a circlet that denotes their family and clan), and secondly their left ear has a large 'V' notch missing from it (this also impairs their hearing).

Alphabet and Language

The Wolfen have their own language which is very gutteral. Representing it in the human alphabet is therefore quite difficult. The basic letters that the alphabet equates to are a,b,d,e,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,q,r,t,u,v,w,y,z. j is pronounced similarly to its use in jeep but with a longer and lower pitch, y is pronounced like an i, z either like zzz or sss, and x like ck, s, or x as in axe.
