Prescient Dreams

When Rifts® Source book 2, The Mechanoids® appeared it set the scene for several immediate stratergies in the development of the game. Since I'm not Kevin Siembieda I don't know what the four scenarios actually are, but the first three are fairly obvoius:-
If like me your running a long campaign starting in 101PA and slowly advancing and your players don't have access to the Mechanoids, Africa, or England and are unfamiliar with the Rifts background then you may find the following useful.
When the dreams start in November 101PA (my interpretation of events) the dreams should be vague and sketchy. As time wears on and each player gets the same dream again, start to flesh out the details. In addition it may be useful to introduce characters/NPCs from other dimensions that may have knowledge of one or more of these threats. This is easiest with the Mechanoids - See Races: Quovgem- for an example.
All Psychic and Creatures of Magic have the dream if they make their saving throw for Psionics. The more Psychicly aware they are the greater the chance of a dream. The dreams are in effect nightmares and begin 1-4 hours after the character retires for the night. The dream always results in the character waking and being unable to return to sleep for a further 1-4 hours. Each time a character goes to sleep roll on the table to see which dream they experience. No two characters will necessarily have the same dream on the same night.

General

You're standing alone on a deserted beach looking out to sea.Dark clouds appear on the horizon and the wind increases.The horizon appears to swell and rush towards you. You realize its a tidal wave and start to run. You can't outdistance it and it crashes around you, waking you with a start.

Mechanoids

You're standing on a hilltop overlooking a grass plain/lush forest/cultivated fields.You see specs on the horizon. As it approaches it resolves in to a cloud of locusts/winged beetles/metallic bugs. The cloud rushes towards you leaving nothing but desolation behind it. You turn to run but the cloud is all around. It envelopes you with a crash and you wake up

Mechanoids

You're sitting on a fallen tree in a forest/jungle watching a stream of ants. You hear the crackle of a falling tree and turn to look. Seeing nothing you turn back to look at the ants but they appear to change and resolve into metallic versions.They stop, look at you, and then move purposefully in your direction. You realise that you're now trapped on the tree which is fast disappearing. The first ant reaches you and you brush it off. More climb on eating your clothes, frantically you try to brush them off, but they're comming faster and faster. You scream and feint into blackness, waking with a start.

General

You're standing behind a fence overlooking a childrens playground. Lots of happy children are playing on the swings, roundabouts, and rocking horses. There is a flash in the distance, then the sound of an explosion. You look up to see the mushroom cloud forming and the cloud of destruction racing towards you flattening everything in its path. The playground explodes into fire and then dust as the hurricane hits. Your body expoldes, you scream and feint into blackness, waking with a start.

Merlin

You're travelling along a road, its evening and getting dark. You spot and inn at the road side and decide to stop.As you enter you half catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of your eye, but when you turn to look there is nothing there. You check into your room and decide to take a bath. You have the feeling you're being watched but can't find anything. You undress and get into the bath. Its hot and relaxing and you fall asleep. You wake with a start to find that you're now it a bath filled with cold sticky slime that holds you down. The walls are running with the stuff and you can feel an icy cold wind blowing. You look up to see that the roof has gone and a single huge eye stares down at you. A huge tentacle reaches towards you, coils for a strike and knocks you into unconscousness. You wake covered in cold sweat.

General

You're walking down a long street. As you pass one of the cars it winks at you. You here an engine start and it moves towards you. You break into a trot, and then a run as it keeps coming.As you run up the street more cars join in. You keep running, looking over your shoulder. The packs gaining, you hear a horn, turn to look where you're going, and get mown down by a huge truck. You wake with a start.

Four Horsemen

You're suspended in the sky watching a lone figure on a mountain. You can hear words, some kind of chant, but can't make them out clearly.The scene shifts, you see a black lake. Four shapes are forming in the liquid. The shapes leave the liquid trailing the blackness like slime behind them. The scene shifts again and you're back at the mountain. The sky is dark and all around is blackness.The four shapes slowly ascend the sides of the mountain.They reach the summit, the mountain explodes, hurling you back and into blackness. You wake.

Mechanoids

You're floating in space. A sun appear illuminating a planet. A huge saucer shaped ship hangs in orbit. Objects large and small come and go from it.On the planet flashes of light resolve into a battle. Metal robots blast the defenders caring nothing for the damage inflicted. Huge machines carve swathes across the planet. Tonnes of material drift into space until there's nothing left. The ship in orbit moves on, a new world, a new sun. Nothing stops it.

General/Merlin

You're walking through a sunlit vale on a pleasent summers day. A fine tree resolves itself within your view. A black tendril appears from out of the sun and attaches itself to one of the branches. The branch end swells to reveal a black catapillar. The catapillar moves along the branch eating the leaves as it goes. Every so often it stops and deposits a black egg, which develops into a small black beetle. A white bird descends and starts to eat the beetles. Another tendril appears from the sun and attaches to another branch. Again the branch end swells but this time to reveal another white bird. The first white bird stops feeding and the two bird fly into the air. The catapillars and the beetles continue to feed. As they fly from the tree the second bird begins to turn black but the first bird fails to notice. As the second bird attacks the first it notices that the tree has been totally consumed!

The Full Monty

This is the most complex of the dreams as it has several stages and several possible endings. The first few times the character has the dream they get the simplist version. As the dream occurs more regularly they get more details and more of the alternate endings.I suggest that this dream is not available until they've had all the oters at least once.
Its twilight, up ahead on the track you see a figure tied to a stake in the middle of a pyre. As you approach the body becomes outlined in a blue haze. Flames begin to flicker at the base of the pyre and it catches. As the flames rise and begin to lick at the body it begins to glow from some inner source. You can now tell that the figure is female.
A spec lands on the right side of the body. It is difficult to see what it is but it seems to break up and disperese across the body.Where it travels there is no longer any light, just burnt tissue. A number of glowing lights rise to the surface of the body and begin to track towards the expanding track of dark specs. When a light meets a spec there is a flash and small explosion that scars the surface. Sometimes the specs contniue on diminished, sometimes they are no more.
This dream has two endings, the second of which leads to the next part of the dream. With the first ending the specs slowly cover the body, and it becomes engulfed in fire. As the body collapses thousands of black specs are flung outwards!
Slowly but surely the lights extinguish the black specs, and the scars heal. The body is whole once more but the light is slightly diminished. A beetle crawls out of the fire onto the right foot. A second crawls onto the left, a third lands on the right hand, and a fourth on the left hand. As each crawls towards the heart a different affect is left in its wake. The right leg becomes scorched and charred (Death), the left leg withers and shrinks (Famine), the right arm becomes a seething mass of magots (Pestilence), and the left arm is cut and scarred and drips with blood (War). Again the lights surface and begin to attack the beetles
. Any that attack the beetle on the right leg whilst the others live just wink out. If the other three beetles are killed the beetle on the right leg withers and dies. If all the beetles meet at the heart then the body becomes transformed into a hideous demon. If only one or two meet then the transformation takes longer.
This dream ends according to which one of the above scenarios the GM wishes to play out. If the three beetles (other than Death) are killed the when Death withers and dies the light returns to the body, but again diminished from its previous level, and the dream continues
. You can now see that the light is no longer hale, and a black cancerous tumour exists in the head. Slowly it grows but the lights ignore it, every now and then a solitary light notices but is quickly snuffed out. This dream has two endings and two subsiduary plots. The two ends are

  • The lights clump together and attack the tumour enmass, and destroy it
  • the lights fail to clump and the body is slowly engulfed by the tumour
The following can be added to either of these tow endings
  • When the tumour first appears, several lights approach and then move away before they are engulfed. There they remain just out of reach always watching. If the lights clump then they join them.
  • After several of the lights are engulfed, the tumour seems to spawn lights of its own. Whilst they appear to be white lights, on closer examination they appear to have a black centre. They seem to lure white lights to within the reach of the tumour. If the white lights clump and attack then these dark lights rush to intercept the attack.
If the dream ends with the lights winning then the last part of the dream plays out. The body is scarred and bruised. The light is barely discernable now. You can now see that the glowing lights are actually coloured in their own right and have distinct shapes. Some lights have a dark centre, and some glow with a sort of dark light. The lights circle slowly at first, but quickly gather speed. Suddenly they fling themselves at one another and there is a deafening crash and explosion. You find yourself awake and on the floor. Your body is bruised and battered!
